Our situation has been different in that my wife & I wanted children & tried off & on for several years before learning my sperm count was so low, I am basically sterile. After that we went to an open marriage for several reasons but basically so my wife could see & date other men. Even though we knew I could not give her children, she still had that need in her to have children. We looked at adoption or IVF and agreed that both were very expensive. We finally talked through it and agreed to talk to the guy she had been seeing about him basically helping us as we called it. He agreed but with several conditions: he knew I was infertile sexually limited with her because she was dating him, but he insisted my sex stop completely with her and even though it would be symbolic, I had to agree to a vasectomy.
