I agree totally.  Set ups don't work well.  At some point, the surprise gets sprung and most women won't react well to that kind of surprise.  It could even kill any chance to eventually cross the goal line.  The big jump in sharing the wife is that day that you can both calmly discuss her being fucked by another man at the breakfast table.  No hard-on, no wide-on.  Just head on.
